I Was on an H1B Visa and Had to Move Back to India. – Hardeep

“Dear Steve,

Hi Steve,

I worked in the US for 5 years on h1b visa and maintained a healthy credit rating during those years.Due to sudden turn of events i lost my job and had to relocate back to india with lot of credit card debt still hanging on my head. I have all the intentions of paying back and clearing it all but its been 3 years now and i havent heard back from any collection agencies or debtors

Is there a way i could find out and negotiate the debt? I also plan to come back to usa to work. will this hamper my chances of getting in and make life difficult with the immigration authorities.

2)How could I just talk to one agency in order to negotiate and settle my old debts and come clear

3)Even i pay off how long will it reflect in my credit file

Thanks in anticipation.

Hardeep”

Dear Hardeep,

It will not hamper your ability to return but once you do your wages could be garnished if they catch up with you again.

You can identify who now owns the debt by getting a consolidated copy of your credit report. I’d wait till you have a U.S. address to use for getting the credit report.

Once you are able to enter into payment arrangements with your creditors then I’d contact them. Until then there is really nothing you can do.

If you want to look at your possible solutions for dealing with the debt you can use the free How to Get Out of Debt Calculator to review your options.

Please post your responses and follow-up messages to me on this in the comments section below.

Sincerly,

You are not alone. I'm here to help. There is no need to suffer in silence. We can get through this. Tomorrow can be better than today. Don't give up.

  1. Hello Steve,
    Thanks for your reply.
I was able to get the credit report from annualcreditreport.com and can see the current situation in it.Could you recommend an agency which could do the settlements on my behalf and all I will have  do is make a monthly consolidated payment.Appreciate your help.

    • Just remember that the free single bureau credit report does not give you the full picture of what is being reported about you. You can only get that with a report from each bureau or a consolidated credit report.
