My Narcolepsy Has Left My Army Husband And I in Trouble. Military OneSource Sent Me to You. – Leslee

“Dear Steve,

I am wondering if you know a way to help us. We are a family of three. My husband, my six year old daughter and myself. We are stationed in Hawaii. My husband is the US Army. We are in very much need of financial guidance. In the last year, everything has plummeted.

Here is a rundown of what we got ourselves into. We bought a house in Hawaii over a year ago. When we bought this house we never thought that I would not be able to contribute a second income. Unfortunately a few months later I was diagnosed with Narcolepsy. I was working a part-time job that brought in an income of $800-$1200 a month. I had to leave my job in February 2011 because of health issues. I was put on medical restriction from driving and still am not allowed to drive. I have applied for disability benefits but there are a minimum of three months waiting list to be even have your application reviewed to deem it qualified for disability. If approved it would be only $62.00- $108.00 a month assistance because I have not had much work experience between 21 to 28 ( my current age). We have been married for ten years. Most of that we have were moving quite often. My husband has spent three tours in Iraq. When he has left two of the tours I moved back to my home state. While moving back and forth i did not have a job. This period of time is what they calculate what you would get for disability. This has become such a stressful ordeal, we are having a tough time to even find a resource of help.

I have always been the one to budget and send out payments for the monthly bills. After my health declined I couldn’t remember to pay bills because of Narcolepsy and the medication to treat it can cause my memory loss. I gave my husband all of the bills to send out and budget. My husband suddenly had to pay all of the bills on one income. We missed a few bills because my husband has never paid them. Since then, it has been one credit card after another spiking our interest rates. We previously had a credit score of 790 and were never late on payments. Now we have more minimum payments than income. We have cut out cable, internet, movies, and only shop for what we absolutely need. We have had to use credit cards just to get groceries and gas for my husband to get to work.

We have tried applying for a loan and were denied. We called all of our credit cards and they weren’t willing to budge on the interest rates or penalties. We have talked with the doctors office and Military Onesource. Military Onesource sent me this website and two others one of which does not work with financial troubles. We also tried the website Prosper. We were not approved. We cannot get even a small loan from our bank we have been with for 13 years.

Today we received another three 35.00 late fees by Wells Fargo because of overdraft of 7¢; 13¢ and 20¢ trial charge put in by Paypal to test the account to verify the bank account which I didn’t know they were going to do. We are constantly getting nailed for 35.00 late fees because of bill pay we had set up in the past. We just got paid today and its already been taken out by Wells Fargo because of the fees. Its been this vicious cycle of late fees then they leave us no money to pay our regular bills. I cannot explain how stressed out we are. We just don’t know how to get out. It is consuming us because we both hate not being able to pay our bills. Please let me know if there is some company or resource available to guide us. Thank you very much.

Dear Leslee,

Thank you for asking your question. I look forward to helping you to find a solution for your situation.

It is so unfortunate that you’ve developed this medical condition which is impacting your life in a negative way. These things happen without warning and fundamentally alter our lives in unseen ways.

You shared lots of information, and I hate to be needy, but I need some more.

Can you breakdown how much you owe and to what kind of creditors. For example, $X to credit cards, $X to auto loan, etc.
